About the Role

The City of Ryde Council is seeking to appoint one independent member to its Audit, Risk and Improvement Committee. This process may be used to fill other positions on the Committee as they arise. 

The Committee was established to promote good corporate governance at Council. Acting as an independent advisory Committee, it provides advice and to Council to assist with its oversight responsibilities. 

The objective of Council’s Audit, Risk and Improvement Committee (ARIC) is to enhance the Council’s governance framework, risk management practices, strategy and performance environment by providing independent advice to the Council.

Experience in Public Sector including Local Government Industry is preferrable. 

Council practices positive EEO and WHS principles.

Highly desirable:

  • Experience in risk management, regulation, governance
  • Experience is leading continuous improvement strategies.
  • Experience in supporting an organisation working through significant reform and change to deliver better services and enhanced probity

 

Selection Criteria

Independent members of audit, risk and improvement committee must demonstrate the following in a written submission:  

Demonstrated understanding of the role of an Audit and Risk Committee member and the relevant legislative and regulatory requirements applicable to Council, including:-

  • An ability to read and understand financial statements and a capacity to understand the broad requirements and responsibilities of Local Government.
  • Functional knowledge in areas such as risk management, performance management, human resources management, internal and external auditing, financial reporting, accounting, management control frameworks, internal financial controls, governance (including planning, reporting and oversight), or business operations
  • A capacity to form independent judgements and willingness to constructively question practices.
  • Can function as an independent member of the committee who is willing to challenge the status-quo and the prevailing consensus to ensure diverse perspectives are considered.  
  • Professional, ethical approach to the exercise of their duties and the capacity to devote the necessary time and effort to the responsibilities of an independent member of an audit, risk and improvement committee.
